Views of mountain tops, of lakes, your house and neighborhoods as seen from the air create an all new awareness that you have never felt before! I will never forget the emotions I felt on the day that I received my instrument airplane endorsement. After taking the written and passing the practical exam with an FAA designated pilot examiner (I was now free to fly in the clouds without an instructor on-board), I flew my first solo instrument flight from Oakland, California to Seattle, Washington. During the return flight the sun was setting and I was flying between two distinct layers of clouds, creating a ceiling of clouds above and a floor below. The most amazing bright red sunset occurred between those clouds illuminating both bottom and top of each layer – nothing I had ever seen before or since. Literally tears came to my eyes it was so beautiful.
As a young person flying gave me a sense of responsibility, an eagerness to learn about weather, engines and how they worked, aerodynamics (yes even including math!), wind, all things connected to airplanes and flying. Now that I am older, I realize the spark that flying created in me has permeated my entire world and taught me accountability, responsibility, and work ethic. Imagine, I had a private pilot certificate in my pocket on my 17th birthday. I have often been challenged to do things that I thought might be impossible for me to do, but each time I felt that way I just remembered how I had persevered through earning my pilot certificate and from that perspective, I remembered if I could do that, I could do anything – and so can you!
